Chess Rules - The Pieces

Each player begins with 16 pieces:

• 8 Pawns
• 2 Rooks
• 2 Knights
• 2 Bishops
• 1 Queen
• 1 King

The starting set-up for the pieces looks like this:

This is the starting set-up.

Don't worry about memorizing how to set up the board just yet. We'll take a more detailed look at that later.

First, let's look at each piece individually, and learn how it moves.
