Chess Openings - The Modern Defense and Pirc Defense
The Modern Defense responds to the King's Pawn Opening with with 1... g6, and the Pirc Defense with 1... d6. Both share common themes. Black does not intend to challenge the centre immediately. His plan is to proceed first with his own development. Black intends to develop his King's Bishop to g7 (the fianchetto) while allowing white to occupy the centre with pawns. As with Alekhine's Defense, this overextended centre will then be attacked with pieces. Both the Modern and the Pirc are part of the Hypermodern School.
How Common are The Modern and Pirc Defenses?
